Indian Paintbrush or Painted Cup (Castilleja linariaefolia) was adopted as the State Flower on January 31, 1917. The roots of the painted cups are partially parasitic on the roots of other green plants. Their true flowers are inconspicuous, but are commonly enveloped by bright red flowerlike bracts.

This facility is a traditional public botanic garden, municipal nursery and community garden with a twist. Their mission is to practice sustainability. Their conservatory is 100% solar heated and 50% of their electricity is solar powered. More than 90% of the labor at the garden is provided by volunteers. Volunteers are seniors, youth, handicapped. The gardens provide applied horticultural therapy in return. Admission to the gardens is free. Of course, donations are greatly appreciated. The gardens are open 365 days/year during daylight hours. The Conservatory is open from 8:00 –4:30 during the week and from 11:00 to 3:30 on weekends. Space is also available for rent for private events. Volunteer and membership roles are available.
