State Flower:Rhododendron Rhododendron maximum

The Rhododendron maximum, or “great laurel,” is the state flower of West Virginia. It was selected on January 29, 1903, by the Legislature, following a vote by pupils of the public schools. It is a shrub of the heath family and may be recognized by its large, dark evergreen leaves and delicate pale pink or white bloom, mottled with either red or yellow flecks.

The mission of the West Virginia Native Plant Society (WVNPS) is to further the appreciation and conservation of the state's native flora through education and voluntary action.
WVNPS supports a variety of programs, including:
Field trips to learn about plants in their natural habitats.
Activities that promote the preservation and enhancement of West Virginia's wild plant communities.
Programs to educate the public about native plants and their threats.
Documentation of native flora, especially rare and endangered species.
A periodic newsletter.
Membership & Chapters
Membership in WVNPS is for one calendar year, January 1 through December 31. New members who join in September or later will be credited through the following calendar year. WVNPS is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. Dues and contributions are tax deductible.
In addition to the statewide group, membership is available in three local chapters. The Kanawah Valley Chapter is based in Charleston, The Tri-State Chapter is in Huntington, and the Eastern Panhandle Chapter is located in Shepherdstown. All three chapters offer local field trips, educational programs, and volunteer opportunities. An additional membership fee is required to join these groups.
