State Flower:American Dogwood Cornus florida

The American Dogwood was adopted as the official floral emblem of Virginia in 1918. The American Dogwood (Cornus florida) is a small flowering tree that normally grows to approx. 15 feet. The tree usually spreads wider than it is tall with branches that grow out in layers. What actually looks like petals are bracts and the flowers are the inconspicuous yellow centers of the bloom. The dogwood bears shiny red fruit that often persist into winter.

NATURE CAMP, Inc., founded in 1941 in Vesuvius, Virginiais an environmental science/conservation camp for youth in grades 5-11. The mission of this camp is to educate a corps of interested and knowledgeable young citizens to conserve and protect the environment and the natural resources of the earth.
VIRGINIA WILDFLOWER PROGRAM, started with the Virginia Department of Transportation in 1976 is a program for the beautification of Virginia’s roadsides by the planting of wildflowers and trees donated by various civic organizations. Virginia industry and communities share the aesthetic and economic advantages of well-maintained roadways. Well-kept highways can even help reduce accidents and litter, besides helping fight “highway hypnosis.” Wildflowers contribute to the environment by providing a source of nourishment for song birds and beneficial insects.
VFGC HEALING GARDEN at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, Virginia features plants known for the medicinal properties in a setting designed to restore the spirit. Donations from garden clubs and members across Virginia have helped to fulfill the pledge of $200,000 to fund this garden.
YOUTH EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES are offered through scholarships awarded annually to college students studying horticulture-related fields.
