Date Of Statehood: January 4, 1896

Slogan: The Greatest Snow On Earth

State Flower:Sego lily Calochortus gunnisonii

The Utah State Legislature approved the sego lily as the State Floral Emblem on March 18, 1911. Between 1840 and 1851, food was scarce in Utah due to a crop-devouring plague of crickets. Families had to learn to forage for food and found the bulbous root of the sego lily to be useful to feed hungry mouths. The flowers grow six to eight inches high and can be found on open grass and prairies in the Great Basin. The flowers bloom in the summer months and are white, yellow or lilac in color. The state’s school children were polled in 1910 and it was their choice that this become the state flower.

Garden Clubs in Utah:
http://www.redbuttegarden.org/ Red Butte Garden cultivates the human connection with the beauty of living landscapes through plant displays and collections, education, conservation, and as a setting for cultural enrichment and events.

In 1930, Dr. Walter P. Cottam, co-founder of The Nature Conservancy and chairman of the Botany Department at the University of Utah, began using campus land for plant research. For more than 30 years, he evaluated plants to determine their adaptability to our region.

In 1961, the Utah State Legislature formally recognized Cottam's impressive collection by designating the University's campus landscape as the State Arboretum.

Today Red Butte Garden is the largest established garden and ecological center that tests, displays and interprets regional horticulture in a 400 mile radius. The Garden has 18 acres of display gardens and 2-3 miles of hiking trails.
