The pasque flower is the first sign of early spring in South Dakota. It is sometimes called the May Day flower. The Pasque Flower is a member of the buttercup family with lavender petals and yellow centers. It resembles a crocus and blooms for only a short time, the French word Pasque means Easter however the flower was originally named Pasch which is a Hebrew word for Passover. Either way, the botanists were trying to describe it’s early spring flowers.
