The Common Blue Violet is the Rhode Island State Flower. Though the violet is called blue, the actual color is purple. These diminutive plants bloom in April and May on delecate stems above the glossy heart shaped foliage. They bloom at about 4 to 6 inches from the ground and flowers are smaller than an inch. You will find the violets in the woods and even in yards and creeping into flower beds. Bunches of violets, in mass, can be tied with snippets of ribbon and put in a juice glass to delight friends and neighbors on May Day.

It's a prestigious designation given only to those who successfully train in various aspects of plant science and complete an internship of 50 hours of volunteer work as part of the URI Master Gardener program of the Cooperative Extension Education Center.
The Rhode Island program began in 1977. Through 2001, more than 1500 people have taken the training and 483 have earned the name "URI Master Gardener". These Master Gardeners have donated more than 113,000 hours of time to Cooperative Extension.
