State Flower:Mountain Laurel Kalmia latiflolia

In 1933, the General Assembly adopted the Mountain Laurel as the official Pennsylvania state flower. The Mountain Laurel is in the Heath family, along with rhododendrons and blueberries. In Mid June, when the Mountain Laurel is in full bloom, travelers on the interstates of PA will easily be able to see the pretty pink blossoms in the woods along the sides of the roads. The foliage is dark green and glossy, and though it is often rumored that picking, cutting or digging up the plant is prohibited by Pennsylvania law, this is not true. Of course, you must have permission of the land owner to do so, but there is no reason not to enjoy the plant in your own landscape. In fact, many cultivated varieties are available for just that purpose.
