State Flower: Violet Viola Sororia

The Common Meadow Violet (Viola sororia) was designated as the official state flower in 1971. The violet had been unofficially the state flower since 1913 when the resolution was first introduced in the legislature. However, more pressing matters too precedence and it wasn’t until the NJ Garden Clubs were able to catch the attention of the legislature that the resolution was finally passed.
Violets grow wild in many species all over North America. They bloom in early spring on delicate stems above a cluster of glossy heart shaped leaves.
