State Flower: Goldenrod Soldiago gigantea

In 1895, Nebraska state legislature declared the goldenrod the official state flower. Solidago is a large genus with many species that can be difficult to tell apart. The plant is a perennial that grows two to three feet tall. The flower head is made up of tiny yellow individual flowers grouped along a main stem forming a rod shaped flower. Some species have flowers that stand erect while others have flowers that droop and curve up again at the tip. You will see goldenrod growing wild and blooming in late summer. Many people believe their allergies are caused by Solidago, however the itchy eyes and runny nose are more likely related to the ragweed that is in bloom at the same time as the goldenrod.
