State Flower: Bitterroot Lewisia rediviva

The Bitterroot is a native plant found growing near the mountains and boulders of western Montana. It blooms in the spring and summer. The plant has a fleshy root that Native Americans used for food and trade. The root is too bitter to eat without cooking, and was normally mixed with berries and meat. The blossoms are beautiful orchid pink. The Bitterroot flower is an icon of the state of Montana. Parks, schools, inns and other businesses use the name in their names. A beloved flower with a Native American history, the flower suites the state perfectly.
