State Flower: Magnolia Magnolia grandiflora

The Magnolia genus is large and varied. The Magnolia grandiflora, which was chosen as the Mississippi state flower in 1900 by a vote of school children, is among the largest. Blossoms reach 8-12 inches across. This species is often called the Southern Magnolia. It grows on trees that reach 60-90 feet tall. The flowers appear throughout the spring and summer and have a sweet fragrance. The trees prefer moist soil and can be found along bogs and streams. They have also been widely planted in the landscapes of the south. In fact, the Magnolia is not only the state flower, but also the state tree.
