Maryland named the Black-Eyed Susan the official state flower in 1918. Rudbeckia had gained tremendous popularity in recent years for landscapes. Garden Clubs in Maryland:
The Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland offers members the opportunity to attend Courses in Gardening Study, Landscape Design, Environmental and Floral Design, which are organized study programs of our National Organization, but sponsored within our state. Once a member completes these schools then they may join the respective Councils as “Consultants” to further their interest in the various fields. The completion of the Flower Show Schools, and passing the entire student judging requirements, a member may become a Flower Show Judge. The knowledge earned through these courses is passed on to the clubs by having Consultants provide programs and share their expertise to the general membership.
Individual clubs work with youth groups to spawn an early interest in horticulture, the environment and floral design. An annual youth Camp is offered to children in these youth groups, or to youth that are related to garden club members. There is a state publication, GARDENEWS, which is printed four times annually and is sent to all dues paying members. Garden club memberships bring friendships, the enthusiasm of shared interests, and the networking of this knowledge on the state, regional and national levels!
