State Flower: White Pine Cone and TasselPinus strobus, linnaeus

We don’t usually think of a pine tree as having flowers, however all plants have flowers, some are just more showy than others. Maine named the White pine cone and tassel (Pinus strobus, linnaeus) its state flower in 1895. The White pine is considered to be the largest conifer in the northeastern United States. Flowers called strobili occur on the tree and then cones develop later in the season. Cones are 4-8 inches in length, usually slightly curved. Cone scales are thin and never have prickles. Cones also have a fragrant gummy resin.
