State Flower: Goldenrod Solidago altissima

Kentucky is home to more than 30 species of Solidago. Commonly, most of them are called Goldenrod. The plan is sometimes invasive and a true wild flower, however some cultivated versions are beginning to show up in garden centers. In the cut flower industry, the flower is marketed under the name Solidago and is grown extensively in South America and sold throughout the US by wholesalers and retailers as a long lasting, in expensive filler flower. Solidago or Goldenrod are often blamed for allergies in the fall, however, the pollen from Goldenrod is not a common allergen, rather, it is the Ragweed that is in bloom at the same time that is responsible for itchy eyes and runny noses.
