State Flower: Wild Prairie Rose Rosa pratincola

The wild rose was one decoration used on the silver service presented to the battleship USS Iowa in 1897 from the sate of Iowa. Later that year, the wild rose was designated as the official state flower. No particular species was named, however Rosa Pratincola is most often cited. Many wild roses are found throughout Iowa and bloom through the summer. Wild roses are characterized by simple flower structures with five petals and a wide open face. They appear in varying shades of pink and in white.
