State Flower: Peony Paeonia

The peony (Paeonia) was adopted as the Indiana state flower in 1957, replacing the zinnia. Peonies bloom in late May and early June. They can be found in a wide range of reds, pinks, purples and white. The blossoms occur in single and double forms. Happily, no particular variety or color was designated as I can’t imagine leaving any of the lovely varieties out of the limelight. Peonies are cultivated widely throughout the state and are extremely popular for decorating gravesites for Memorial Day. Indiana does not have a monopoly on the Peony, there are Peony lovers across the country. To learn more visit
