State Flower: Blue Violet Viola

The law that made the violet the state flower designated the "blue violet." There are many violet species that are blue or purple in color, so the state flower cannot be definitively named by genus and species. The most commonly recognized violet in Illinois is the dooryard violet (Viola sororia). It is also one of the most easily grown; it grows in anything from full sunlight to deep shade. Some would even venture to call the violet a weed as it often shows up in cultivated beds and flower gardens. The purple violet flowers are edible and are sometimes used as cake decorations. Often the petals are covered in sugar for this use. To learn how to sugar a violet, please visit www.baking911.com
