State Flower: Wild Mock Orange Philadelphus lewisii

The Wild Mock Orange (Philadelphus lewisii) was designated the state flower of Idaho by the legislature in 1931. Sometimes called Syringa, you’ll more often find information listed under the genus Philadelphus, or Lewis’s Mock Orange. This fragrant flower is found on a shrub that grows to six feet. The plant is drought tolerant and easy to care for however, it will bloom with the best show when it is happy, with adequate moisture in a sandy, well drained soil. Gardening in Idaho:
The Idaho Botanical Garden is a non-profit organization, providing a beautiful environment for garden lovers, tourists, community events, weddings, school tours, and horticultural education. Our vision is to become a regional destination garden, providing a beautiful and peaceful educational environment containing significant and notable plant collections. The Garden is a living museum, dedicated to the advancement and appreciation of gardening, horticulture and conservation, through plant collections and education programs within an aesthetic landscape.
This handbook is for educators, school administrators, students, parents, and community members who are interested in establishing a native Idahoan garden in their school. Nurserymen, landscapers, and native Idahoan plant gardeners also may find this useful.
The Garden occupies 50 acres that originally served as the farm and nursery for the Idaho State Penitentiary. The Old Penitentiary shut its doors in 1973 and for 12 years the land lay dormant. Dr. Davidson and the first board of directors negotiated a lease in 1984 and transformed the area from rock, weeds, and rubble into beautifully cultivated gardens. Today the Idaho Botanical Garden has blossomed into 13 specialty gardens, each with a unique focus on Herb, Rose, Alpine, Contemporary English, Outlaw Field, Butterfly & Hummingbird, Iris, Meditation, Water, Cactus, Peony, Children, and Idaho Native Plants and the Don Dick Outdoor Classroom.
