State Flower: Cherokee Rose Rosa laevigata

Georgia’s Federation of Women’s clubs chose the Cherokee rose as the state flower in 1916. Cherokee Indians distributed the plant along the eastern sea board and their name was attached to the rose in the late 1800’s. This wild rose has a climbing habit and is an evergreen. The stems are very thorny and the large single flowers are waxy white with yellow centers. The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. was founded in 1928. They are a non-profit educational organization with 16,000 members statewide. There are approximately 550 individual garden clubs in the organization.
GCG is affiliated with the 243,000-member National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC). The State Headquarters is located on the grounds of the State Botanical Garden in Athens, Georgia. In 2003, they celebrated their 75th anniversary.
The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of the State Chairs of our various programs, District Directors, State Officers, and former Presidents. There are seven geographical districts: Laurel, Azalea, Oleander, Camellia, Magnolia, Dogwood, and Redbud. These seven District groups carry out the state program on a local level throughout Georgia. President for 2005-2007 is Dollie Harper of Hartwell. The State Presidents serve two-year terms and provide the leadership necessary to manage such a large all-volunteer service organization.
