State Flower: Saguaro Cactus Blossom Carnagiea gigantea

The Saguaro Cactus Blossom has been associated with the Arizona as far back as territory times in 1901. In 1931 it was adopted as the official state flower of Arizona. The saguaro cactus blooms fragrantly and profusely in spring through early summer. The blossom, being of a succulent plant, has a waxy feel. Like many white, fragrant flowers, the Saguaro cactus blooms at night. Blossoms last only one evening, which is long enough for them to be pollinated, producing bright red fleshy fruits that feed the birds later in the summer.
